Overview
The Raspberry Pi Camera Module V2 is the second-generation official camera released by the Raspberry Pi Foundation. Moving away from the older OmniVision chip, the V2 relies on the exceptional 8-megapixel Sony IMX219 sensor. It plugs directly into the native CSI (Camera Serial Interface) port using the provided ribbon cable, leveraging hardware-accelerated image processing directly from the Pi’s GPU. It is natively compatible with the libcamera architecture in modern Raspberry Pi OS releases.
Key Features
Sony IMX219 Optics: Delivers sharper details, wider dynamic range, and far superior automatic white balance compared to generic 5MP modules.
8-Megapixel Still Capture: Generates beautiful $3280 \times 2464$ pixel photographs—perfect for high-precision optical character recognition (OCR) or image logging.
High-Speed Video Capabilities: Smoothly streams full HD 1080p at 30fps, or switches to high-framerate modes up to 90fps for motion-tracking or slow-motion analyses.
Fixed Focus Lens: Factory-focused from 1 meter to infinity, but can be manually adjusted using the included focus tool for close-up macro imaging.
