Overview
The 74164 (often found as 74HC164) is a high-speed 8-bit edge-triggered Shift Register. It features two serial data inputs (AND-gated) and eight parallel outputs. Data is entered serially through one of the two inputs; either input can be used as an active HIGH enable for data entry through the other input. This IC is a staple in digital electronics for “Output Expansion,” allowing you to control 8 different components using just a Clock and Data line.
Key Features
8-Bit Parallel Output: Turn 2 serial pins into 8 high-speed parallel outputs.
Gated Serial Inputs: Provides extra control over data entry without needing extra gates.
Asynchronous Master Reset: A dedicated “Clear” pin to reset all outputs to LOW instantly.
Fully Cascadable: Connect multiple 74164 chips in a row to get 16, 24, or 32 outputs from the same 2 pins.
Wide Voltage Range: Works perfectly with both 3.3V (Raspberry Pi/ESP32) and 5V (Arduino) logic.
