Overview
The L293D is a quadruple high-current half-H driver designed to provide bidirectional drive currents of up to 600 mA at voltages ranging from 4.5V to 36V. It is most commonly used to drive inductive loads such as relays, solenoids, DC motors, and bipolar stepping motors. Unlike the standard L293, the L293D version includes internal ESD protection and clamp diodes to protect your microcontroller from back-EMF (voltage spikes) from the motors.
Key Features
-
Dual H-Bridge: Control two DC motors (forward and backward) or one bipolar stepper motor.
-
Wide Voltage Range: Works with motor voltages ($V_{CC2}$) from 4.5V up to 36V.
-
Built-in Protection: Internal kickback diodes prevent motor noise from damaging your Arduino or ESP32.
-
Breadboard Friendly: Standard 16-pin DIP package fits perfectly into any breadboard or IC socket.
-
Separate Logic & Power: Allows you to run your logic at 5V while running your motors at a higher voltage.

Why use the L293D IC instead of a Module?
-
Space Saving: It takes up much less room on a PCB than a pre-made module.
-
Learning: Great for students to understand H-bridge logic and pin configurations.
-
Cost: Significantly cheaper for mass-production or school lab kits.
